BACKGROUND

Note: As shown above the YVAF-6X has the thrusters and "pop up" shoulder missiles similar to the QAF-6S Shadowdrones.  However it has the upper shoulder arm missiles of the VAF-6S

With the mass production of the VAF-6S "Shadow Fighter" and the QAF-6S "Shadow Drone" for the what proved to be the final assault against reflex point well underway, the Engineers at the Robotech Research plant on Tirol came to the belief that additional improvements could be made to the venerable alpha's airframe.  They convinced REF high command to produce an experimental fighter which would have an internal missile load of 92 short range missiles.  This would be accomplished by redesigning the shoulder intakes to be like those of the QAF-6S.  The largely ineffective, and unnecessary because of the protoculture shadow cloaking device, smoke dispensers would be removed and 8 additional short range missiles would be stored in the lower legs.

In addition to the additional missiles, a new more advance Destablizer, the EU-13x, was added.  The EU-13x had all the admirable characteristics of its non-experimental brother but discharge energy in 15 MJ shots vs 10 MJ for the EU-13.  In addition, the EU-13x was given the ability to fire in short bursts.  The YVAF-6x kept the venerable RRG mk9 nose lasers and DDI-6 medium range missile launchers of the original alpha fighter.

Difficulties in production limited the total number that were readied in time for the final assault against Reflex point to twenty four.  These units were grouped into two elite squadrons and placed on the SS. Alabama.  Early in the battle the first squadron was ordered to lead the ground assault against reflex point, while the second squadron was assigned to protect the SS. Alabama.  General Reinhart believed that the first squadron could perhaps knock out the central power core of Reflex point before the battle was truly joined.  The initial assault went as planned until the first squadron penetrated the central power core.  At this point they were overwhelmed by some 250 shock troopers.  Only 3 of the initial 12 YVAF-6x were able to withdraw.

The second squadron was held in defense of the SS. Alabama for the entire battle.   They were able to hold off approximately 100 armored scouts, all the while only losing 2 units.  Unfortunately, the energy phoenix destroyed the unit entirely.   As a result only 3 of the initial 24 units survived the battle.  In spite of the relatively few number of suriving units, the REF high command ordered an addition 128 units for further testing.

NOTES:

  1. Destroying the head of the YVAF-6X  will knock out the mecha's major sensor systems, including all of the optics systems (infrared, nightvision, thermal). Radar and communications will be unaffected.
  2. Depleting the MDC of the main body will destroy the mecha.

WEAPON SYSTEMS:

  1. EU-13X Destablizer: The Shadowkiller mounts an experimental verision of the EU-13 detablizer.  The REF pilots which were consultants to the Shadow killer project praised the EU-13 for its ability to punch holes in invid force fields; however, they felt that the rate of fire for the weapon was a hindrance.  In response to these comments, the EU-13X has the capablity of firing concentrated short bursts of up to 3 blasts.

  2. RRG mk9 NOSE LASERS: The orginal nose lasers of the Alpha figher were retained

    shadow-beta.jpg (8633 bytes)

  3. GR-12 SHOULDER LAUNCH SYSTEM: The GR-12 shoulder launch system from the shadow drone was added to provide additional punch

  4. MM-68 MULTI-MISSILE SYSTEM: The smoke screen dispensors were removed, and 8 additional hammerhead short range missiles were added to the MM-60 missile system for a total of 68 short range missiles

  5. DDI-6 MEDIUM RANGE MISSILE SYSTEM: Six 260mm x 1.2m Diamondback MRMs can be stored under the intakes

  6. BODY/WING HARD POINTS: Two fixed hard points are mounted on each wing.   These hardpoints can be used to carry 25 short range missiles, 5 medium range missiles or 2 long range missiles.
  7.

  8. HAND TO HAND COMBAT: If necessary, the YF-19 can engage in melee combat rather than use a weapon. The AVF is extremely agile and can execute most typical hand to hand combat moves, such as punches, jump kicks, leap attacks, rolling with impacts, etc.
