BACKGROUND
During
the trip back to Earth after the misfold to Pluto, designers on board the SDF-1
looked to improve their fire support units which provided the SDF-1 point
defense against incoming waves of Zentraedi. The MAC-II was designed to
operate as an artillery unit within a planetary gravitation field and
proved to be extremely unwieldy in zero-gravity. As a result, the MAC-II would take up fixed positions on the surface of the
SDF-1 were they would remain throughout the battle. Unfortunately,
they were relatively easy prey for Zentraedi pods that managed to break through to the
surface of the SDF-1.
In order to provide long range fire support, designers turned
towards the proven VF-1 "Valkyrie" as the basis for the new
design. The armored variant of the VF-1 proved to be widely
successful, and designers were curious if the design could be modified to fill
the fire-support role desperately needed. The mecha would not need the versatility
of a battleloid mode or the maneuverability of the fighter. Thus designers
built the "Super Ostrich" around the guardian mode which would provide
a stabile firing platform with
the excellent maneuverability. Without the need for
the complex transformation machinery, engineers were able to increase the armor
in the main body, arms, and legs. In addition, two CTB-5 conformal tanks were added as
a permanent part of the mecha to the lower legs thus providing an additional 25kph of delta-v per leg.
The weapons compliment was radically changed over the standard VF-1.
Two turret mounted PB-11 particle beam cannons were added to the top of the
unit. The
turret was capable of traversing a full 360 degrees and the particle beam
cannons are capable
of firing 30 MJ bursts up to 20 times per minute. The VF-SGP-1 would
permanently mount two EP-4 particle beam cannons and a single RRG L-3 light
laser in the left arm. The right arm normally carried a GU-11 gun
pod. In each shoulder a GPB-11s multi-missile system, found on the armored
veritech, was added to provide 24 short range missiles for use primarily as an
anti-missile system. Underneath the nose of the
mecha are two Mauser RoV-20 light laser system.
The first five units were produced in May 2010 and were immediately pressed
into action protecting the SDF-1. Two of these units were destroyed later
that month when elements of Khyron's fleet successfully destroyed the sensor
suite on the SDF-1's command citadel. The remaining three units proved to
be incredibly successful. The armored ostrich had sufficient mobility to
move across the SDF-1 to the sector of the ship that was threatened.
On June 29 2010, two of the super ostrich units were able to repel a
breakthrough of 5 female power armors which were attacking the #3 shoulder rail
cannon.
Upon the SDF-1's return to Earth on July 12 2010, the RDF high command was
interested in the design and slated military engineers to study the design for
possible mass production. Unfortunately, the SDF-1 was forced to return to
space before the design study was fully completed. The remaining three
units were stationed on the SDF-1 during the final battle of the First Robotech
War. Unit #2 and #4 were stationed near the command citadel and unit #5
was ordered to respond to any sectors which might have collapsed. During
the battle, unit #5 was unfortunately overwhelmed by incoming Zentraedi waves,
only after destroying no less than 23 battle pods. The remaining two units
survived and were placed into mothballs several months later.
Five years later, unit #2 was brought out for further study by the
REF. Military planners were looking at the "Super Ostrich" for
possible use as a heavy artillery design. They replaced the two PB-12
cannons with two RRG PBC-15 particle beam cannons. The protoculture
energizer proved underpowered for the new modifications. In addition the
VF-1 production was shut down earlier that year. This meant that the
airframe of the "Super Ostrich" as well as 50% of the components were
based on a design no longer in production. The REF decided not to produce
and an upgraded version and the final two units were placed back into mothballs
at the RDF graveyard in Albuquerque.

STANDARD EQUIPMENT FOR THE ARMORED OSTRICH:
- AUTO-PILOT: The Ostrich is equipped with a computerized auto-pilot, allowing the
pilot to relax or even sleep during long voyages. The auto- pilot can be programmed with a
single destination or a complex flight plan involving multiple speeds, directions, and
destinations. The onboard computer will alert the pilot when the fighter is near its
destination, and can also be set to automatically signal when sensors detect objects near
the mecha. The auto-pilot was designed with long intra-system space journeys in mind.
- TI-1000 COMBAT COMPUTER: The combat computer tracks and identifies specific enemy
targets, and has a database of over 10,000 images stored in memory. The computer can
identify and track up to 250 targets simultaneously.
- EXTERNAL AUDIO PICKUP: Range: 300 ft (91.5 m). A sound amplification system that
can pick up normal conversation up to 300 feet away.
- HEAT AND RADIATION SHIELDS: Special shielding prevents the penetration of life
threatening head and radiation. A radiation detection and alarm system are linked with the
shields and will sound an alarm if there is a rupture in the shields and what the levels
of radiation are.
- HOMING SIGNAL: The escape pod of the VF-1Y is equipped with a homing device
that enables rescue teams to locate a disabled craft or ejected life pod. The range of the
signal is 400 miles (640 km). Most REF ships and veritecs can locate and track a homing
signal, and the onboard computers will automatically notify their pilots if such a signal
is detected.
- LASER TARGETING SYSTEM: Range: 100 miles (160 km). Used for increased accuracy in
the striking of enemy targets and is partly responsible for the mecha's strike bonus.
- LOUDSPEAKER: A loudspeaker system is built into the craft, which can be used to
amplify the pilot's voice up to 90 decibels.
- OPTICS: INFRARED: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). This optical system projects a beam
of infrared light that is invisible to the normal eye, but detectable by the mecha's
sensors. The system allows the pilot to detect hidden/concealed objects by their IR
reflectiveness. The beam will be visible to anyone with IR sensitive optics, however.
- OPTICS: NIGHTVISION: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive light image intensifier
that emits no light of its own, but relies on ambient light which is electronically
amplified to produce a visible picture.
- OPTICS: THERMAL IMAGER: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive optical heat sensor
that detects infrared radiation projected by warm objects and converts that data into a
false-color visible image. The system enables the pilot to see in the dark, in shadows,
and through smoke, and also adds a +10% bonus to pilots using a tracking skill.
- HUGHES X-BAND AWG-30 RADAR: 60 mile range.
- RAYTHEON VHF SURVEILLANCE RADAR: 200 mile range
- RADIO/VIDEO COMMUNICATION: Long range, directional communications system with
satellite relay capabilities. Range: 600 miles (960 km) or can be boosted indefinitely via
satellite relay.
- SELF-DESTRUCT: To prevent capture of an advance variable fighter by the enemy,
the pilot can activate the VF-SGP-1 self-destruct system, which will cause the fighter
to explode after a delay of up to 60 minutes (time is set by the pilot). The explosive
damage is contained within a 20 foot (6 m) area and inflicts 1D6x10 M.D. to everything
within the radius of the explosion. All internal systems are obliterated. The escape pod
will be automatically ejected prior to the explosion unless the pilot overrides the
ejection sequence.
- STANDARD SURVIVAL KIT: All RDF veritecs come equipped with a portable survival
kit. Inside the small reinforced box is a medium-sized flashlight, two hand flares, one
rocket flare, a compass, infrared distancing binoculars, a small mirror, a pocket knife,
dehydrated and concentrated food (can be stretched into a five day supply for one person)
and basic first aid items (aspirin, bandages, disinfectants, etc.)
- TACTICAL LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM: The Armored Ostrich's cockpit is pressurized, and also
provides additional air feeds to the pilot's flight suit that provides him with
pressurized breathing. The REF flight suit also contains an upper and lower g-suit that
promotes blood circulation even during high-g turns, thus decreasing the possibility of
pilot's blacking out in combat.
- Elettronica Radar Warning Receiver (RWR)
- OlDelft Infra-red Warning Receiver (IRWR)
- Westinghouse ALQ-250(V) active sensor jammer
- Chaff and Flare dispensers: 12 chaff and 12 flares are stored in each
lower leg
COMBAT BONUSES FOR ARMORED OSTRICH TRAINING:
- 2 attacks per melee (plus those of the pilot).
- Add one additional action/attack at levels six and eleven.
- +2 to strike
- +0 to parry
- +3 in guardian
- +2 to roll with a punch or fall with an impact, reducing damage by half.
- Critical strike same as pilot's hand-to-hand.
