BACKGROUND
The
Tolver Malgrin was developed at the
end of the Robotech Masters' Empire to replace the Quel-Quallie (Cyclops recon vehicle)
in urban conflicts with enemy ground units. In specific the unit was optimized to
combat the swarms of Inorganic units that were invading the outer core worlds.
The Tolver Malgrin is armored with the most advanced Chobham composite
available at the time and is invulnerable to all small arms fire and provides moderate protection against
intermediate class anti-mecha weaponry (such as the GU-11 or standard hammerhead missile). Only
heavy class anti-mecha weaponry have any chance of bringing the Tolver Malgrin down with a single blow.
The Tolver Malgrin is armed with an impressive number of both particle, laser,
and missile based weaponry. Although, the unit was designed to fight
primarily in the urban environment any Earth Defense personnel whom encounter
even a single unit should approach with a high degree of caution.
Four Myrel Dohtem-09 particle cannons are mounted on two weapon's arms on either side of the body. Each is capable of firing 18 MJ pulses of energy every four
seconds and are capable of traversing a full 360 degrees in azimuth and from -45 up to 90 degrees in elevation.
Mounted inside the the particle cannons are two Baranuir laser cannons capable
of firing 15 MJ bursts of laser energy out to an effective targeting range of
three kilometers. In addition, to the heavy anti-mecha weaponry six
Lacrotin-02 light lasers are mounted on the unit, two on the sensor head
and four mounted on the rear for point defense against small Invid inorganics or
for use in an anti-personal role. To supplement its short range energy
based weaponry the Tolver Malgrin mounts a single Galnost long range missile
launcher capable of striking targets in excess of 100 km from the unit, although
the internal capacity of the system is limited to eight missiles.
The Tolver Malgrin is designed with a full set of short range senor suites to help it acquire and engage any
inorganics. This includes a short range X-band
targeting radar, nightvision, infrared, laser targeting for cueing fire support, and seismic sensors.
Most of these systems are mounted in the sensor head of the unit.
Standard Zentraedi doctrine for the unit was to deploy the Tolver Malgrin into platoons of 9 units to protect specific districts of
a city. Air units
would cue the civil protection units as to the number of direction of the threat. If the
inorganics were to break through the initial defense, the
Tolver Malgrin would use their thrusters to redeploy several blocks and set up a
new defense line. Twenty years after the introduction of the Tolver
Malgrin, a booster unit was design to allow the mecha to
operate in space. While the booster unit did provide the Zentraedi
military planners a degree of flexibility, the mecha was still typically
assigned to ground based recon roles while the older Quel-Quallie vehicles
continued to operate in space borne operations.
Approximately 500 units were created and all but 2 were deployed on the Empire's
homeworlds. Two, however, were deployed as part of the initial strike force on Macross Island. Both units were eventually destroyed by
the veritech elements from the Prometheus launching several missile volley.
However, not after three VF-1A's were destroyed in the process.

- EXTERNAL AUDIO PICKUP: Range: 300 ft (91.5 m). A sound amplification system that
can pick up normal conversation up to 300 feet away.
- GRAVITY SENSOR: ZTPS1-SS gravity wave sensor an detect the hyperspace defold of any craft out to 10 AU.
- HEAT AND RADIATION SHIELDS: Special shielding prevents the penetration of life
threatening heat and radiation. A radiation detection and alarm system are linked with the
shields and will sound an alarm if there is a rupture in the shields and what the levels
of radiation are.
- HYPERSPACE COMMUNICATION: The Tolver Malgrin has a hyperspace
communication system which allows the unit to communicate with friendly
forces up to 50 light-years away
- INFRA-RED WARNING RECEIVER: VPAS2-SS Infra-Red Warning Receiver (IRWR)
- LASER TARGETING SYSTEM: Range: 50 miles (160 km). Used for increased accuracy in
the striking of enemy targets and is partly responsible for the mecha's strike bonus.
- LOUDSPEAKER: A loudspeaker system is built into the craft, which can be used to
amplify the pilot's voice up to 90 decibels.
- NIGHTVISION: ZTPSP1-SS nightvision range: 2000m . A passive light image intensifier
that emits no light of its own, but relies on ambient light which is electronically
amplified to produce a visible picture.
- OPTICS: ZTSP1-SS Telescopic optics (x10 magnification)
- RADAR (TARGETING): The Tolver Malgrin possesses a ZTSP-1SS
X-band short range radar with a range of 35km against 0 dBsm targets.
- RADAR (SURVEILLANCE): VSA-511 VHF surveillance randar with a
range of 120 km against 0 dBsm targets
- RADIO/VIDEO COMMUNICATION: Long range, directional communications system with
satellite relay capabilities. Range: 100,000 or can be boosted indefinitely via
satellite relay.
- RADAR WARNING RECEIVER: VPAS2-SS Radar Warning Receiver (RWR)
- SEISMIC SENSORS: Four ZTSP1-SS seismic sensors are located in the feet
- SENSOR JAMMER: ZTSP1-SS broad band sensor jammer which can be
used to jam both sensors and missiles; however the Zentraedi systems are no where near the effectiveness of
equivalent power REF
or the Robotech Masters
- THERMAL IMAGER: ZTSP1-SS thermal imager range: 2000m . A passive optical heat sensor
that detects infrared radiation projected by warm objects and converts that data into a
false-color visible image. The system enables the pilot to see in the dark, in shadows,
and through smoke, and also adds a +10% bonus to pilots using a tracking skill.
HISTORY:
The booster unit was designed primarily to allow the Tolver Malgrin to
operate more effectively in space borne operations. The booster unit
mounts four Z'trea-4 plasma shock engines which in conjunction with the main
engines can accelerate the unit up to 6.7 g. The booster unit can provide
enough thrust to lift the Tolver Malgrin into planetary orbit, although this was
not normally done.
A long range VHF surveillance system is mounted in the booster unit, as the
primarily mecha was designed to operate on the ground and mostly in the urban
environment a long range radar system was not included in the original design.
However, for space based operations the addition of a long range surveillance
system is critical. The system is capable of detecting a veritech type
target (5 dBsm) out to ranges exceeding 200 kilometers.
In addition to the added thrusters, fuel and sensors, the booster unit mounts
four forward firing Kzter laser cannons capable of firing 15 MJ bursts of energy
to an effective combat range of 5000 meters. The cannons are powered
directly from the protoculture energizers on the booster unit and will continue
to function even if the the mecha is severely damaged.
