BACKGROUND

As the battle against the Invid continued and the rebellion of the  Disciples of Zor (DoZ) weakened the Robotech Empire from within, the Masters came to the conclusion that they were relying too heavily on their genetically created Zentraedi warriors.  A radical new approach to the conflict with the DoZ and the Invid was needed.  The Masters' weapon scientist decided to abandon the organic element totally and rely on an inorganic automated system.  The first automated system created was to be used in conjunction with their Zentraedi mecha units.

The Zentraedi Automated Drone, codenamed the "Mite", by the RDF was designed to provide the Zentraedi with long range fire support.  The Mite possessed only laser weaponry which allowed them to loiter on the battlefield long after other ammunition based units would be forced to withdrawal.  The Mite has two long range Karatszon Quillo-127 laser cannons capable of firing 5 MJ laser bursts out to an effective combat range of 10 kilometers.  Unfortunately, the cannons had difficulty tracking targets at less than 500 meters.  Designers knew of this limitation and mounted four shorter range Makharz Vawnous-11 light lasers which the system would use if any targets come within 500 meters.

The mite is armored with the standard advanced titanium alloy that is found on all Zentraedi units.  The armor is capable of stopping all small arms and heavy infantry weaponry.  However, it offers limited protection against anti-mecha weaponry, such as the 55mm GU-11, and poor protection against heavy anti-mecha, such as the PB-11 found on the RDF Excalibur.

10,000 units were produced in the final days of the Robotech Empire.  Most were placed on board the Grand Fleet during the final Zentraedi assault on Earth.  Zentraedi doctrine was to deploy the units well behind the main mecha lines and allow the Mites to fire at long range while the Zentraedi engage the RDF forces.  Fortunately, for the Allied Earth Defense Forces, the Mites were unable to provide effective fire support because the vast quantity of forces prohibited clear shots.  In addition, the AI unit had difficulties distinguishing between allied Zentraedi and those fighting with the RDF.

NOTES:

  1. * Destroying the MDC of the main body will destroy the unit
  2. ** Destroying the sensor eye of the Mite will destroy the units major sensor systems, including all of the optical and radar systems.  Communications will be unaffected and other units are able to cue the unit to the positions of enemy units.  Attacks are effected and the Mite will be at a -6 to strike.

WEAPON SYSTEMS:

  1. 2 x KARATSZON QUILLO-127 LASER CANNONS: Two long range Karatszon Quillo-127 laser cannons are mounted on either side of the sensor eye.  Each cannon is nearly 8 meters long which provides the columnating lenses the ability to accurately fire 5 MJ laser bursts at extreme distances and hit stationary targets.  In testing the drone was able to hit a stationary target out at 200 kilometers.  However, under combat conditions the effective range against mecha size units is limited to 10 kilometers because of the accuracy of the sensor and slew rate.  Unfortunately, the lasers were unable to effectively track targets at less than 500 meters and suffered from a decrease in accuracy.

  2. 4 x MAKHARZ VAWNOUS-11 LIGHT LASERS: Mounted around the main sensor eye are four light lasers.  Each laser is capable of firing 2 MJ bursts up to 5 times per melee.  The lasers were only used if the enemy forces were able to close within 500 m of the unit at which point the primary weapon system would have difficulties targeting the incoming units.
