BACKGROUND
The Regult Tactical Battle Pod, and its variants, were the standard
Zentraedi infantry mecha and used until the end of the Robotech Empire.
The Regult was simple to maintain, operate, and easy to mass
produce. REF intelligence estimates that nearly one-billion
Regult Tactical Battle Pods of all types were produced throughout the
Robotech Wars. For all of its advantages, the Regult's major weakness was its
incredibly thin armor which was incapable of resisting damage from
anti-mecha weaponry of any caliber. As the war with the Disciples
of Zor (DoZ) and the continuing conflict with the Invid continued to drain
away resources, the Robotech Masters could no longer afford their
disposable Zentraedi mecha and they quickly came to the conclusion
that in order to win higher quality units must be fielded. The Zel Regult, also designated the "Advanced Tactical Battle Pod" by
REF military intelligence, retains much from its earlier design,
including nearly all of the basic internal structure and simplicity to
maintain and operate. The flight control and sensor systems are
virtually identical to the earlier Regults; although, the Zel Regult
was designed with a larger protoculture energizer which results in a
more responsive unit. Other than the addition of the Touwhaug
Rasilszt-6 Missile Launcher, which is nearly an identical weapon
to that mounted on the Gluuhaug Regult
(Light Artillery Pod), the Zel Regult could be piloted by any Zentraedi
warrior with minimal training.
Although the Zel Regult is similar to earlier designs, the unit is a
major upgrade from the Regult and possesses vastly upgraded armor and
weaponry. The unit is armored with an advanced titanium alloy
capable of withstanding all small arms and weaponry up to 20mm in
caliber. However, multiple hits from medium caliber or higher
weaponry, such as the 55mm GU-11 or the 120mm smoothbore cannon on the Spartas Hovertank, will penetrate into the internal structure and in
short order incapacitate the unit. Although still relatively
under armored when compared to contemporary RDF designs, the Zel Regult provided an armored pilot's compartment which would
allow the pilot some measure of survival even if the unit had been disabled.
The major addition to the Zel Regult's weaponry is the Touwhaug
Rasilszt-6 missile launcher mounted on the top of the
unit which replaces the largely ineffective Karatszon Quillo-152 pulse
lasers. The missile launcher is capable of firing any of the
Zentraedi medium range missiles (Miff, Megrim, or Morgoth) out
to a typical combat range of 50 km. The addition of beyond visual
range weaponry was a sizable upgrade, as it now allows the common
solider to strike at incoming targets well beyond the short range
engagements, less than 2 kilometers, capable with the basic Regult's
weaponry. The older Makral Martszur Type-4, also unknown as the
PB-10, were replaced with a single barreled Makral Martszur Type-5
particle beam cannon. Each cannon is capable of firing nearly
twice the energy of the older models and are independently targetable
with a range of motion from ±45 degrees in elevation and azimuth. The chin mounted Moldile Tszan-83
22.3mm autocannons were retained and are mounted in a similar chin
position to the standard Regult.
The Zel Regult proved to be an incredibly successful design which if
introduced earlier in the Robotech Wars could have made a substantial
difference in several key battles with the Disciples of Zor and
Invid. Unlike other advanced Zentraedi Pod designs, such as the
Assault Pod or the
Stealth Pod, the Zel Regult would not require the
basic Zentraedi warrior to change their tactics, as would be required
with the introduction of stealth technology, but still provide a substantial upgrade in
armor and weaponry, unlike the specialized long range Assault Pod, over the
earlier designs. Unfortunately for the Robotech
Masters, the depletion of resources
caused by the incessant fighting made mass production of the Zel
Regult impossible. Only 105,000 units were produced from 2002
until
production ended just prior to the departure of the Imperial Fleet in
2011. Nearly all of the Zel Regults were destroyed during the
Zentraedi Rain of Death on 18-April 2011; however, REF forces did
encounter several units during the Sentinel
campaign and subsequent mop-up operations.

- Leap Kick: 6D6 MDC
- Body Block: 3D6 MDC
- Stomp: 3D4 MDC (only effective against small objects)
STANDARD EQUIPMENT FOR ZEL REGULT:
- ACTIVE SENSOR JAMMER: VBPS1-SS internal ECM
providing broadband protection (100 MHz to 10 GHz). Estimated
system effective radiative power 55 dBW
- AUTO-PILOT: The Zel Regult is equipped with a
computerized
auto-pilot, allowing the pilot to relax or even sleep during long
voyages. The auto- pilot can be programmed with a single destination or
a complex flight plan involving multiple speeds, directions, and
destinations. The onboard computer will alert the pilot when the
fighter is near its destination, and can also be set to automatically
signal when sensors detect objects near the mecha. The auto-pilot was
designed with long intra-system space journeys in mind.
- CHAFF AND FLARE DISPENSERS
VBPS2-SS: 50 chaff and 50 flares are stored in each of the lower
legs
- COMBAT COMPUTER: The VBPS1-SS combat computer tracks and
identifies specific enemy targets, and has a database of over 10,000
images stored in memory. The computer can identify and track up to 25
targets simultaneously.
- EXTERNAL AUDIO PICKUP: Range: 300 ft (91.5 m). A sound
amplification system that can pick up normal conversation up to 300
feet away.
- HEAT AND RADIATION SHIELDS: Special shielding prevents the
penetration of life threatening head and radiation. A radiation
detection and alarm system are linked with the shields and will sound
an alarm if there is a rupture in the shields and what the levels of
radiation are.
- INFRA-RED WARNING RECEIVER: VBPS1-SS (IRWR)
providing rear aspect coverage from IR guided
missiles
- LASER RANGE FINDER / TARGETING SYSTEM: VBPS1-SS
multi-frequency laser ranger and designator (Range 50 kilometers)
- LOUDSPEAKER: A loudspeaker system is built into the craft,
which can be used to amplify the pilot's voice up to 100 decibels with
a built-in translator
- OPTICS (INFRARED): VBPS1-SS multi-band
camera system range 25,000 meters. This optical system projects a
beam of infrared light that is invisible to the normal eye, but
detectable by the mecha's sensors. The system allows the pilot to
detect hidden/concealed objects by their IR reflectiveness. The beam
will be visible to anyone with IR sensitive optics, however.
- OPTICS (NIGHTVISION): VBPS1-SS multi-band camera
system range 25,000 meters. A passive light image intensifier
that
emits no light of its own, but relies on ambient light which is
electronically amplified to produce a visible picture.
- OPTICS (THERMAL IMAGER): VBPS1-SS
multi-band camera system range 35,000 meters. A passive optical heat
sensor that detects infrared radiation projected by warm objects and
converts that data into a false-color visible image. The system enables
the pilot to see in the dark, in shadows, and through smoke, and also
adds a +10% bonus to pilots using a tracking skill.
- RADIO/VIDEO COMMUNICATION: Long range,
directional
communications system with satellite relay capabilities. Range: 600
miles (960 km) or can be boosted indefinitely via satellite relay.
- RADAR (SHORT RANGE / FIRE CONTROL): VBPS1-SS X-band
(9.5 GHz) phased array with conformal antenna on the main body and legs
of the mecha thereby reducing the passive radar cross section.
Dection radius against a 0 dBsm target 85 km. The system provides
long-range detection and tracking of targets at all altitudes with
multi-mode capability including high-resolution synthetic aperture and
passive ESM modes.
- RADAR WARNING RECEIVER: VBPS1-SS Radar Warning
Receiver (RWR) providing all aspect coverage from radar guided missiles
- TACTICAL LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM: The Zel Regult's cockpit is
pressurized, and also provides additional air feeds to the pilot's
flight suit that provides him with pressurized breathing. Zentraedi
armor also contains an upper and lower g-suit that promotes blood
circulation even during high-g turns, thus decreasing the possibility
of pilot's blacking out in combat.
