BACKGROUND
As the Second Robotech War came to a close in August of 2030 two separate fleets
of Robotech Expeditionary vessels had come to the aid of the Armies of the
Southern Cross (ASC) in their fight with the Robotech Masters. Not only
did these ships bring much needed reinforcements for the ASC, they also provided
intelligence on the Invid and brought to the attention of the United Earth
Government (UEG) of the very real possibility of a third alien invasion of the
Sol system. Although severely depleted from the climatic battles of
the 2nd Robotech War and currently involved in an undeclared conflict
with the Eastern Soviet Independent States (EBSIS), the UEG tried to rebuild the
shattered ASC with a new generation of mecha which could fight the expected
Invid onslaught.
One of the new designs was the SDR-06 Advanced Space Hargun or known as the
"Mini Beta" because of its resemblance to its much larger veritech cousin.
The SDR-06 was designed to counter the mass wave tactics of the Invid by
providing larger capital ships with numerous point defenders. The SDR-06
could operate in the vacuum of space and was capable of engaging several Invid
Armored Scouts all within a few kilometers of its carrier ship. The mecha
was designed on as small as frame as possible to allow capital ships to carry as
many of the Advanced Space Harguns as possible. Capital ships can carry
nearly three SDR-06s for every
VFH-10 "Ajac".
The Mini Beta's primary weapon are two GR-91 missile bays are mounted internally
in the armshields of the Space Hargun. Each missile bay holds up to eight
plasma or high explosive
hammerhead
short range missiles. In addition to the the GR-87, the SDR-06 has two
GR-87 missile bays mounted on either side of the unit. Each missile bay
can hold two
Corelsnake short range missiles most commonly found on the
VF-12 Beta fighter.
Although the mecha can mount either the plasma or high explosive versions of the
Corelsnake,
the unit is normally mounted with four plasma or mark 'B' variants. The
Space Hargun can fire the missiles in volleys from one to four missiles;
however, pilots normally save these missiles for battles against especially
armored targets as they represent the units largest offensive punch.
Although normally used once all the missiles have been depleted or if the enemy
has closed to less than 100 meters, the SDR-06 has a single EP-33 single
barreled particle beam cannon is mounted on the left shoulder. The EP-33
can fire single 5 MJ bursts out to an effective combat range of 1,500 meters.
The weapon is powered directly from the main protoculture generations providing
enough energy for up to 20 shots per minute (5 shots per melee).
The SDR-06 is armored with the latest third generation Chobham low-mass
composite plating providing immunity from all light anti-mecha weaponry and
moderate protection from medium class (55mm or less). The unit possesses two
arm shields with additional armor protection which allows the unit to survive
single strikes from high caliber (120 mm) anti-mecha weaponry.
However, repeated strikes from high power anti-mecha weaponry can penetrate the
armor and thus disable the unit. Unfortunately, the armor also proved
vulnerable to Invid physical attacks as the Chobham tended to break off in large
slabs although it does provide excellent protection against Invid annihilation
disks.
A total of 357 SDR-06 Advanced Space Harguns were produced from October 2030
until the Invid invaded the planet on March 15, 2031 or barely enough to fully
outfit two Battle class destroyers. Although, the Advanced Space Harguns
proved itself to be a useful tool in fighting the Invid suicide waves compiling
a nearly ten to one kill ratio, the shear number of Invid Armored Scouts coupled
with the depleted state of the ASC space forces proved decisive and predictably
nearly 90% of the ASC defenders were destroyed. Only 23 SDR-06 units
escaped the battle to flee to the UEG moon bases where they were used primarily
for base defense over the next decade of Invid occupation.

STANDARD EQUIPMENT FOR THE ADVANCED SPACE HARGUN:
- ACTIVE SENSOR JAMMER
WESTINGHOUSE ALQ-225(V): internal ECM providing broadband protection.
Estimated system effective radiative power 30 dBW.
-
AUTO-PILOT: The Space Hargun is equipped with a computerized auto-pilot, allowing the
pilot to relax or even sleep during long voyages. The auto- pilot can be programmed with a
single destination or a complex flight plan involving multiple speeds, directions, and
destinations. The onboard computer will alert the pilot when the fighter is near its
destination, and can also be set to automatically signal when sensors detect objects near
the mecha. The auto-pilot was designed with long intra-system space journeys in mind.
- COMBAT COMPUTER:
The combat computer tracks and identifies specific enemy targets, and has a
database of over 1,000 images stored in memory. The computer can identify and
track up to 20 targets simultaneously.
- EXTERNAL AUDIO PICKUP: Range: 300 ft (91.5 m). A sound amplification system that
can pick up normal conversation up to 300 feet away.
- HEAT AND RADIATION SHIELDS: Special shielding prevents the penetration of life
threatening head and radiation. A radiation detection and alarm system are linked with the
shields and will sound an alarm if there is a rupture in the shields and what the levels
of radiation are.
- INFRA-RED WARNING RECEIVER OLDELFT (IRWR):
Providing rear aspect protection from IR guided missiles
- LASER TARGETING SYSTEM: Range: 100 miles (160 km). Used for increased accuracy in
the striking of enemy targets and is partly responsible for the mecha's strike bonus.
- LOUDSPEAKER: A loudspeaker system is built into the craft, which can be used to
amplify the pilot's voice up to 90 decibels.
- OPTICS (INFRARED): Range: 2000 feet (610 m). This optical system projects a beam
of infrared light that is invisible to the normal eye, but detectable by the mecha's
sensors. The system allows the pilot to detect hidden/concealed objects by their IR
reflectiveness. The beam will be visible to anyone with IR sensitive optics, however.
- OPTICS (NIGHTVISION): Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive light image intensifier
that emits no light of its own, but relies on ambient light which is electronically
amplified to produce a visible picture.
- OPTICS (THERMAL IMAGER): Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive optical heat sensor
that detects infrared radiation projected by warm objects and converts that data into a
false-color visible image. The system enables the pilot to see in the dark, in shadows,
and through smoke, and also adds a +10% bonus to pilots using a tracking skill.
- RADAR ERICCSON CYCLOPES:
X-band pulse Doppler radar. Detection range
against 0 dBsm target 40 km. System consists of a three conformal array
on the body and arms.
- RADIO/VIDEO COMMUNICATION: Long range, directional communications system with
satellite relay capabilities. Range: 600 miles (960 km) or can be boosted indefinitely via
satellite relay.
- SELF-DESTRUCT: To prevent capture of an advance variable fighter by
the enemy, the pilot can activate the Space Hargun self-destruct system, which will cause the fighter
to explode after a delay of up to 60 minutes (time is set by the pilot). The explosive
damage is contained within a 20 foot (6 m) area and inflicts 6D6 M.D. to everything
within the radius of the explosion. All internal systems are obliterated. The escape pod
will be automatically ejected prior to the explosion unless the pilot overrides the
ejection sequence.
- STANDARD SURVIVAL KIT: All ASC mecha come equipped with a portable survival
kit. Inside the small reinforced box is a medium-sized flashlight, two hand flares, one
rocket flare, a compass, infrared distancing binoculars, a small mirror, a pocket knife,
dehydrated and concentrated food (can be stretched into a five day supply for one person)
and basic first aid items (aspirin, bandages, disinfectants, etc.)
- TACTICAL LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM: The Hargun cockpit is pressurized,
and also provides additional air feeds to the pilot's flight suit that
provides him with pressurized breathing.
